PF transfer stuck because you have two UAN numbers
Your new employer created a fresh UAN instead of using your existing one. The old balance stays on the old UAN, so the automatic transfer can't find it.
Not sure this is you? Take the 6-question checker
Why it's stuck
- Automatic transfer only works when both member IDs sit under the same UAN.
- A second UAN usually appears because the new employer registered you without your existing UAN.
- Since January 2025, EPFO lets you file the transfer yourself, with no employer sign-off, when both UANs are linked to the same Aadhaar. If either UAN was issued before 1 October 2017, your name, date of birth and gender must also match across them.
Do this next
- Pick the UAN to keep: the one your current employer is paying into. Write down both UANs.
- Log in to the EPFO Member Portal with the UAN you're keeping. Make sure Aadhaar is linked and KYC is verified (Manage → KYC).
- Go to Online Services → One Member – One EPF Account (Transfer Request). Enter the old UAN or old member ID and confirm it with the Aadhaar OTP.
- If the old UAN isn't linked to the same Aadhaar, or your details differ, the portal will route the request to an employer. Fix the mismatch first (see name/DOB mismatch) or use the HR message below.
- From now on, give only the UAN you kept to every employer.
- If the old UAN still looks active after the money moves, raise a grievance on EPFiGMS (EPFO's grievance portal, linked from the EPFO website) and ask for the old UAN to be deactivated. Menu names on the portal shift after updates; look for the closest match.

Don't
- Don't open, activate or use a third UAN “to start fresh”.
- Don't withdraw the old balance just because merging feels hard. Transfer and withdrawal are different things (see the FAQ).
- Don't share your UAN password or OTP with anyone who calls claiming to be from EPFO.
FAQ
Can I merge two UANs myself online?
Yes, in most cases. File “One Member – One EPF Account” from the UAN you're keeping and enter the old UAN or member ID. When both UANs are linked to the same Aadhaar, EPFO's January 2025 change lets this go straight to EPFO without employer approval. Older UANs (issued before 1 October 2017) also need your name, date of birth and gender to match.
Which UAN should I keep?
Keep the UAN your current employer is contributing to. Move the old member IDs into it.
Will my service period carry over?
A transfer moves your balance and service history to the new member ID. That's one reason people transfer instead of withdrawing. Check your passbook after it settles.
Other reasons a transfer gets stuck
- KYC not complete (Aadhaar, PAN or bank pending)
- Name, date of birth or gender mismatch
- Date of exit not updated for your previous job
- One employer runs its own PF trust (exempted establishment)
- Transfer pending with employer approval
- New member ID not linked yet, or no first deposit
- Everything looks fine, but no automatic transfer started
- Transfer claim rejected
- Claim is with EPFO (under process) or settled but not visible
- No new PF account to transfer into yet
Not EPFO. PFFork is an independent free guide from Opti, not affiliated with EPFO or the Government of India. It doesn't ask for or store your UAN, name or any personal data. Rules and portal menus change; always confirm on the EPFO Member Portal. Facts reviewed 5 October 2026.
