Between jobs: your PF can't be transferred yet
A transfer moves money from your old member ID to a new one. Without a new PF-covered job, there's nothing to transfer into yet.

Why it's stuck
- A transfer needs a new member ID under your UAN, created when an EPF-covered employer registers you.
- If you're between jobs, self-employed, or your new employer doesn't deduct PF, your balance simply stays in the old account.
Do this next
- Use this time to get records ready: activate your UAN, link Aadhaar, verify KYC, and check your old job's exit date (you can mark it yourself two months after leaving).
- When you join a PF-covered job, give HR your existing UAN on day one. Once the first deposit is in, the transfer can usually start automatically.
- Thinking about withdrawing instead? Withdrawal rules (waiting periods, how much, which claim type) have changed in recent years. Read the current EPFO FAQ and Member Portal before deciding. This page doesn't advise on that choice or its tax treatment; a qualified professional can.
Message to send HR
Fill in the [brackets] yourself. Nothing you type here leaves your device.
Don't
- Don't let a new employer create a second UAN.
- Don't decide to withdraw because of forwarded WhatsApp messages. Check the current EPFO rules first.
- Don't share your OTP or password with anyone offering to “release” your PF.
FAQ
Can I transfer PF if I'm not working right now?
No. A transfer needs a new member ID at an EPF-covered employer. Your balance stays in the old account until then.
Should I transfer or withdraw my PF?
This page doesn't advise on that. Transfer keeps your balance and service history together under one UAN. Withdrawal rules and their tax treatment are set by EPFO and tax law; check EPFO's current FAQ and, if needed, a qualified professional.
What should I tell my next employer?
Give them your existing UAN on day one and ask them not to create a new one. The message on this page covers it.
Other reasons a transfer gets stuck
- Two UANs: your old PF is on a different UAN
- KYC not complete (Aadhaar, PAN or bank pending)
- Name, date of birth or gender mismatch
- Date of exit not updated for your previous job
- One employer runs its own PF trust (exempted establishment)
- Transfer pending with employer approval
- New member ID not linked yet, or no first deposit
- Everything looks fine, but no automatic transfer started
- Transfer claim rejected
- Claim is with EPFO (under process) or settled but not visible
Not EPFO. PFFork is an independent free guide from Opti, not affiliated with EPFO or the Government of India. It doesn't ask for or store your UAN, name or any personal data. Rules and portal menus change; always confirm on the EPFO Member Portal. Facts reviewed 5 October 2026.
